Bolivia, Potolo Llacota Mantle with Mythical Animals in Pink and Blue on Maroon Ground
These fantastic animals, demons and monsters are unique to Potolo. These creatures and are said to be envisioned by young women who participate in a ritual that involves spending the night in a cave, likely while using entheogens. This coming-of-age ritual and the visions of demons and strange animals are considered a part of the young Potolan woman’s passage from childhood into adulthood. Potolan weavings, and the animals they portray are associated with sexuality and fertility.
